Fine art in Savannah
Event sponsors and their guests will be invited to Non-Fiction Gallery for a champagne reception and a private viewing of Hills & Valleys.
In collaboration with Art Rise Savannah, this will be a private launch of a temporary exhibit, featuring Niki Johnson’s work as well as complementary work created by artists in our community. The exhibit will be available for public viewing after the launch and until March 19.
To create Hills & Valleys, Niki carefully deconstructed aluminum signs from defunded Planned Parenthood health centers, repurposing nearly every square inch of the materials. Hills & Valleys unites these reimagined materials to create a large-scale sculptural image of the hips, groin and thighs of a woman. The film Artist/Activist by Tyler Pelzek tells the story of the piece.
In Niki's words
“I began collecting the signage from Planned Parenthood health centers defunded under Governor Scott Walker’s administration in Wisconsin three years ago. As a lifelong supporter of Planned Parenthood and women’s rights, I recognized the aluminum signage as a powerful symbol of love and loss. These materials had the power to become a symbol capable of empowering individuals to confront the precarious state of reproductive rights in the United States.”
